Barrington Suburb Guide
A popular south-side family suburb anchored by Barrington Mall
Ward: Spreydon-Cashmere
Barrington is one of south Christchurch's most popular family suburbs, centred on Barrington Mall -- the main retail hub for the Spreydon-Cashmere area. The suburb lies on flat, well-drained ground between Spreydon to the north and the gentle foothills leading toward Cashmere. It is characterised by large sections, established gardens, and a mix of bungalows and post-war housing typical of mid-twentieth-century Christchurch.
The suburb suffered relatively minor earthquake damage compared to areas to the east, and has retained much of its original housing stock. Good schools including Hillmorton High School and several primaries serve the area. The Port Hills are visible from most streets, giving Barrington a pleasant outlook for a flat suburb.
Barrington's property market offers good value -- prices sit below equivalent suburbs north of the city, while quality of life is high. The recently upgraded Barrington Mall provides an anchor for retail and services, and CCC has invested in parks and streetscaping through the area.
