Burwood Suburb Guide

An east Christchurch suburb regenerating after significant earthquake impacts

Ward: Burwood-Pegasus

Burwood is a residential suburb in north-east Christchurch that experienced severe earthquake damage in the 2010-2011 sequence. Widespread liquefaction led to large-scale red-zoning of properties, and the suburb's population and built environment were substantially reduced. The cleared land has been incorporated into community open space and the wider east Christchurch regeneration programme.

The remaining residential area is being renewed, with modern infill housing replacing damaged homes. CCC has invested heavily in roads, stormwater, and three waters infrastructure to support the rebuild. Burwood Hospital, one of Christchurch's major public hospitals specialising in spinal and complex care, is a significant employer and institution in the suburb.

Property prices in Burwood are accessible, making the suburb attractive to first home buyers and investors. Proximity to Burwood Hospital creates consistent demand from healthcare workers, and the ongoing regeneration of east Christchurch is gradually improving the area's amenity and connectivity.
