Wainoni Suburb Guide
An east Christchurch suburb with post-earthquake regeneration
Ward: Burwood-Pegasus
Wainoni is a residential suburb in east Christchurch, between Aranui and the Ōtākaro Avon River. The suburb was severely affected by the 2010-2011 earthquake sequence, with widespread liquefaction damage and significant red-zoning. Much of the former residential land has been cleared and returned to green space as part of the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor regeneration.
The remaining residential areas have seen significant infrastructure investment -- new roads, stormwater upgrades, and three waters improvements have modernised the suburb's services. New housing has been built on cleared sections, and the community retains a strong identity through local organisations and marae.
Wainoni is one of Christchurch's most affordable suburbs, making it accessible to first home buyers. The ongoing east Christchurch regeneration and the growing river corridor amenity are long-term positive factors for the area.
