Ferrymead Suburb Guide

A coastal suburb where the Ōtākaro Avon River meets the sea

Ward: Linwood-Heathcote

Ferrymead occupies a unique position at the mouth of the Ōtākaro Avon River, where it flows into the Avon-Heathcote Estuary. The suburb includes the historic Ferrymead Heritage Park -- New Zealand's largest operational heritage park, featuring tramways, a historic village, and working machinery dating from the late 19th century. It is one of Christchurch's most visited attractions.

The residential part of Ferrymead sits on gently rising ground near the estuary, offering some properties with views over the water. Housing is a mix of older established homes and more recent development on the slopes above the estuary. The suburb's position on the edge of the Port Hills gives it better soils than the flat eastern suburbs, and it performed reasonably well in the 2011 earthquakes.

Ferrymead residents enjoy access to the estuary walkways, the heritage park, the nearby Moncks Bay boat ramp, and the climbing areas and trails of the Port Hills. It is an increasingly popular suburb for buyers who want coastal and hillside amenity within easy reach of the city.
