Aranui Suburb Guide

An affordable east Christchurch suburb with a strong community identity

Ward: Burwood-Pegasus

Aranui is one of Christchurch's most affordable residential suburbs, located on the flat eastern side of the city between New Brighton and the central city. The suburb has a working-class heritage and a tight-knit community that values its local schools, parks, and services. Like much of east Christchurch, Aranui was significantly affected by the 2010-2011 earthquake sequence, with widespread liquefaction damage and some property buy-outs.

The earthquake rebuild brought major infrastructure investment to Aranui -- new roads, stormwater upgrades, and renewed housing. The Aranui Community Trust and local marae are central to the community's recovery and development. The suburb has a notably high proportion of Māori and Pacific Island residents compared to the Christchurch average, giving it a distinct cultural character.

Aranui's median house prices are among the lowest in Christchurch, making it an entry point for first home buyers and investors. The suburb has benefited from CCC's east Christchurch regeneration programmes, and proximity to New Brighton, the Rawhiti Golf Course, and the Travis Wetland adds amenity for residents.
